There is a Japanese-borrowed internet slang term for art made with simple tools, "Oekaki". I adore the style, it very much brings you back to 2007. Pure soul.
I'm using Gimp, but since I was a total beginner more or less, I wanted to keep the complexity of my tools down. I know this oekaki style can look great, so I can just focus on drawing, not worry about learning fancy tools or debating what kind of lineart I want to do. I'm also using a mouse, so that gave me another reason to go with something easy to work with.

What I remember doing in the latter years is just trace internet memes for the school art classes. Shitposting irl, god that was cringy but I regret nothing.
I suppose there's some of that copying you guys tell beginners to do.

I mean you don't really need any formal math background even for graphics programming, I didn't know anything advanced when I started. You learn it all by doing, actually that's the best way to learn. But eventually you need the formal theory, or you'll be stuck a self-taught amateur.

There is no single reference. But I obviously looked up and took inspiration from various sources. Isn't that what all artists do?
I've gathered like hundreds of pics in these couple weeks to learn drawn various bits and pieces.
A lot of it is just redraw until it looks good. Takes forever but once you get something that looks good, now you know how it's done.
