I remember someone saying something along the lines of "We can say whatever we want" when that is clearly not the case. I'm all for constructive criticism, no buts about it. All I ask is that it's just that. Constructive and not "LOOMIS".

No, it's considered studying. In fact it is exactly how some of the old masters learned, studying from their successors. If you only draw from your imagination, you will never understand how certain things are supposed to look or how they work as believable objects in space. They're not meant to be claimed as original pieces, they're meant to help build principles that you can then apply to your own work. That's why it's called a study.
