I didnt mean to sound rude, but I guess is different for each one of us. I believe that someone should focus in one field and try his best to improve in that specific area.

Shading is important, but when you start, you should focus on the basics, and shading isn't one of them. Trying to mix shading while you are starting to study anatomy will only lead to frustation, since you still don't know how the muscles work, what planes do they have, and how those planes change when moving. You can start putting some shading in your draws after you feel confident in your figures though.
4 years in one subject is a long fuckin time for a one subject though. I've been studying anatomy for a year, and just now I'm confident enough to move to perspective, altough I know I will coming back to anatomy later, because there's always new knowledge to apply to your drawings.

The simplest way is to try the pose yourself, and see how it works. Also look for references of walking cicles.
