Why is it that the only time I can draw something decent looking is when I'm copying someone else? pic related is one of the first drawings I ever did on paper and all I did was find an anime girl online and try to emulate it

The quality of my art is very inconsistent and it feels like the only thing I'm good at is being a photocopier more than anything

I found some random anime girl drawing off google to try and see how well I could copy it.

I'm having this issue where I can copy a reference decently enough but if I try to make it into my own thing it looks flat and kinda shit. Maybe I'm not using references right
