This. I literally just try to replicate the look with the tools that are available to me. For example, when I wanted to draw a cake for my birthday, I didn't know how to make the frosting look satisfyingly convincing. So I looked it up and inspected the material's behavior when illuminated, then replicated that look. I also couldn't find anything about frills in my visual library, so I looked up a picture on danbooru and tried to replicate the look too.

This is also helpful if you want a shortcut, but trying to achieve it yourself can give you the same result, it'll just take longer. Yet it'll also give you practice mileage, which is indispensable.

I think it's only really good for learning how to render/color or how to draw/color attractively. You can't possibly learn construction or perspective when you only look at the resulting art. You have to get the necessary knowledge first.
