Are you familiar with figure drawing by Anthony Ryder? A lot of what I doing draws inspiration from the way him renders. The thing is that, it is not an entirely unconscious process. Even though typically when people think about hatching they think about fast sketches, but often times, you'll need to consider the direction of the form and density of the marks in order for it to look "coherent" if that make sense.

Pencil is more forgiving than pen in terms of cross hatching, but if you want to practice just hatch marks then sometimes you have to force yourself to do it with pen.
