At what point do you stop purely copying what you see (as a beginner) and to start adding theoretical understanding, or are both important to do?

As in: in Keys to Drawing the guy recommends focusing a lot more on the subject (at least in the first section) with drawing blind contours and whatnot, and I can see how that's useful if you want to lose your symbol drawing.

But at some point you need to add in what you know about things like value and form, and start thinking about the drawing itself, right?

Does anyone have a link to the full book this is from? It's Hiroshi Misawa.

No problem, glad to pass on /ic/ wisdom. Another thing you have to train is your eye for judging values.... which is hard as fuck for anyone starting out. Good luck. Don't get stuck in the details if you're just doing a value study. Call it what it is and do no more - you have plenty of time to make fully rendered & detailed pieces.

Can anyone dump some good references and pictures of value studies and lineart? Or just studies in general, like pic related?
I'm not really going to copy off of them, but I figured some good examples of what sketches or studies should look like will help me understand where to improve.

I tried googling all over the place but I didn't really get what I want.
