quick paint job. look at the facial features and what lines up with what. the corners of the iris with the corners of the lip, the bottom of the ear with the tip of the nose and right cheekbone, one tear duct with the wing of the nose and one with one of the nostrils, the top of the right eye with the center of the left eye and where the ear starts. practice looking at pictures and spotting relations within the image. before you start something like this it helps to mark out the top, bottom, left, and right-most parts of the image and draw an envelope around your image. from there you'll take measurements of angles you're dropping. as others said, understanding the light and shadow sides of the image is really important too. they're all tools to help you get down the proportions but in different manners.
