This is the only backup layer I had of the full body. I'm usually much more careful and deliberate when sketching, but this just happened to be an exercise that I decided to turn into a full piece on a whim. Still, what's wrong with Mattesi? I only spent a few hours reading FORCE a few years ago but it really awakened something in me.

Clothes are especially difficult with fine lines. But that and line smoothing zero are necessary to create the subtle bumps and curves that make it look life-like. Don't ask me how long I spent on the pleated skirt. That was such a fucking bitch...

3.5 years. I kept a sketchbook during classes a few years before that, so I guess its not totally from zero.

>is this merely a question of mileage
Yes, and, unfortunately, talent - not that I'm even that good - its just the truth. There are no tricks for something as basic and fundamental as pen handling. Maybe line smoothing/stabilization at zero plays a part, but I otherwise avoid stippling marks like you did on the right. The more continuous your lines, the better.
>larger brush sizes
Funny that you mention that, as someone on /lsg/ had nagged me about this just a few months ago. I now understand that they were completely right, and thick brushes do indeed serve as a crutch of sorts. Bless them. So I say just quit. It encourages bad habits and inhibits growth.

Read the above.
tl;dr Just fucking do it.
