Lesson 1: When shading, hold your pencil sideways like so. Some people get a penknife and carve up the side of the pencil to make the lead even longer, but that's usually unnecessary unless using a charcoal pencil.

Additionally, don't be afraid to spend a long time on your drawings. It's fine to spend some time on a drawing, have a break then come back to it. I usually can't go 5 minutes without checking the internet but I always go back to what I'm doing soon after.

Finally, I'd recommend reading Keys to Drawing and maybe then Perspective Made Easy. Both of these can be found in the book sharing thread and helped me immensely. Good luck.
