Learning how to copy photos and doing bargue plates was a mistake.
It didn't help me with learning how to draw cute anime girls at all. Don't follow my steps; you'll only waste your time in the most joyless way possible.

Yeah, I find it really difficult to capture likeness of a model without simply copying it (like I did on this study). If you have any tips about fixing that, then I'll gladly listen.
