yep, it's this old chestnut again. a dark object has a compressed value range, smaller than a light object.

they don't have the same degree of value change just at different parts of the scale. a light object goes from light to black, a dark object goes from dark to black.

yup.

you have to remember that even light surfaces become very dark.

for example in a dark room everything is entirely black.

so in all circumstances where there is no light hitting a surface it's black. even if the surface is a light colour.

now obviously ambient light means there's usually a bit of light. but it's worth keeping in mind that light surfaces don't really shift up in value, they include more values.
