Help me /ic/ find a natural path to colour.

I've tried for years using all kinds of colour theory books recommending all kinds of palette configurations; primary, split primary, Zorn limited, 12 colour split primary, complementary, split-complementary, secondary, analogous, triadic, monochromatic, etc... And I've only rarely got good results and even then I'm not sure if the colours had anything to do with it.

I really envy artists who just squeeze out a bit of this colour or that or whatever they fancy and make it work.

What the fuck am I missing?
