No, I start with a box in which I place a simplified head shape. It's not a sphere or an egg, it's shaped like itself. You just learn this shape and draw it. In standard views, like in profile, you don't need the box. I tried learning the Loomis method, but it doesn't make it easier or better for me. In the end, you will still need to learn the shape of the head, especially if you want to make different heads with varying shapes. I like the Vilppu method, but, again, you need to learn the shape of the cranium. So, I just learnt to do this and that's it. Of course, I'm still a beginner, but I'm pretty sure that with experience I'll just get better at using this instead of adopting another method.
