They made a study with butterflies; noticing that the darker a butterfly was the more reproductive success they'd have. So they made a butterfly model and painted it pure black and they went NUTS trying to mate it.

And so they started tearing off the wings to see at which point would they not want to mate with it, and they tore off the wings completely till there was just a stick left. They we're still trying to bone it. 2d art is just a stick.
