is "just draw what you see" not just a very obvious meme? If that were really what were being learned then someone studying and drawing trees for years would expect to effortlessly jump to portraits. Studying anatomy would be obviously irrelevant as well. Clearly, the specific subject you want to draw needs to be studied, not some kind of "sight." I'm not convinced it's not all just better, more informed symbol drawing.
