Drawing becomes more enjoyable the better you get at it, so keep it up. Even with good painting/rendering skills, if your drawing fundamentals are weak then it can screw up the entire thing. Pic related is an extreme example, but look at this really well-fucking-done digital painting but how the artist screwed up the guy's leg somehow.
Sure you can learn your anatomy/proportions/etc by painting it...but it'll be significantly faster to just draw it.
