For these kinds of paintings you really need to play up the contrasts between the different design elements. There's good contrast with the lighting right now but the temperature and texture needs a wider range for it to work. The puddles should FEEL wet. The sand should FEEL dry. The shadows on the left should FEEL cold and the light on the right should FEEL hot. relevant sargent
