ah alright, that's exactly what i was going to say but i wanted to hear your thoughts on it. most cartoons look like they're taking place on a theater stage, hence the relatively flattened perspective. staging and gestures matter more than conveying a sense of 3d-space, which is great for expressive motions like in pic related.
japanese layouts and storyboards are treated like an imaginary camera, with a focus on framing. that's why the action works so much better in anime. there are obviously exceptions to this, but it's hard to find the latter in traditional American cartoons.
it oftentimes feels like construction is used as a way to arrange coherent shapes, rather than build consistent volumes and move them around accurately.
