Value works across all plains, crosshatching in particular is relatively easy to provide a smooth blend of grey (or colored) hues.

If anything crosshatching is easier to push values than any other form of blending. Light hatching to provide lighter areas, darker hatching to to provide mediums and crosshatching to over crosshatching to elevate the darkest areas. It ain't rocket science
