I think I usually get enough hue variance just by tinting every color normally. The shadows of a red object are a little purple, while the shadows of a yellow one are a little green. Things in heavier shadows or lighting will have heavier tint.

And whites reflect the color of what's around them. So a white ball in some grass would probably have both green and blue shadows on it.
