How do I stop being heavy handed when I draw? I noticed that when I try to draw lightly, it either all comes out very dark, or I just have trouble holding my pencil and drawing lightly to the point to where I can barely make a straight line.

When drawing from photograph, is it cheating to use pixel-based guidelines to assess proportions, or is it basically just utilizing the held pencil method with more specificity?

Hey, /ic/, how does one find a good private art teacher? One that can kind of guide you in building the fundamentals (gesture, perspective, construction, value, line quality, etc), eventually leading to portfolio work? On the same token, what are some red flags of bad teachers?

> if you can't self-teach you won't make it
> read the sticky and just do that instead
> lol, needing a teacher

Yeah, yeah, I understand. A lot of the skills can be developed working on your own, but my family is insistent on it and they're willing to finance it. Also, I really feel it wouldn't hurt to have some guidance and a second opinion to both keep me on track and prevent me from creating any bad habits that would be very hard to unlearn in the future.

A dead sticky link and many dead pages overall brought this about.

THE NEW STICKY THREAD

Because we can't be sure if a new sticky will ever be made, or if other sites won't go down, adding to that a certain uncertainty of if we can even trust the user base of /ic/ with an off site site, here is the proposal.

1) We address the common concerns we run across on a damn near constant basis. Be this a crash course in almost anything as even the basics I believe we are competent enough to guide people on.

2) Once people get further than basic symbols, this is where we need to have a put up or shut up rule, basically an image or reference to a book is necessary.

3a) If we are talking about a book/website/youtube video, it needs to be available freely, meaning we can download the book, easily obtain the video, access the website.

3b) To facilitate this, we need to download the videos (youtube) and websites and and have them accessible in another form be it mega or mediafire. To further facilitate this from potential copyright bullshit, rar/zip the videos (non commercial, only freely available youtube) and don't mark them in a descriptive way. To know if the files are the ones you are looking for, we will either say the name of the file and size or just the files size.

4) Distribution of the guide should be handled through #1 a pastebin link housing the text info along with links #2 a zip/rar file housing all the text and links for offline storage. #3 by using readily available books and videos we link to where the knowledge of finding them

Ideally this would be a sticky with a link to the bin, but as have no idea if it will happen, or if we can trust people, a distributable version of the guide would be for the best.

I will not be bumping this. If its a bad idea, let it die, if you think its good, contribute.
