I really appreciate your help. I'll remember not to use pure black or white. Also never thought to limit myself to a number of predetermined values. I still don't really push my values, even the pic you replied to was tonally adjusted.
Ambient light is still something I can't wrap my head around, I know how it works but it seems like it bounces all around everywhere, even in places where I think the surfaces are close enough to one another to be occluded. I'll keep practicing
