Does anyone know why color theory works?

I don't mean practically how it works, we've all seen the charts on complimentary colors and shit, I get that. Has there ever been a decent explanation of WHY, say, humans like orange and blue mixed together in certain ratios? The closest I can get is 'some arcane evolutionary biology' but I think more precision would be really interesting.

You've finally acquired the necessary skills to make the kind of art that will stand the test of time. You're mastered every skillset possible associated with art and can now create breathtaking masterpieces.
The only cost is that you cannot make porn and you will not be able to make a living over your sexual material anymore no matter how good it is.

The upside is that everything else you make will keep you out of debt and you can do what you want and be able to collaborate with anyone and everyone with every benefit possible (no, they cannot make or give you any pornographic material but you can still have sex).

Most people probably won't agree, but his prints give me such a sense of longing.
