It's pretty much the definition of pillow shading. The shadows just go all over the place without regard to places where the form actually should be catching light, and the shading is just all in the center of the forms in an attempt to simulate light and bounce light. There's no edge control whatsoever. The anatomy of the lineart is fine but you obviously missed the part where he said he didn't draw any of those, he's just shading over them. So if you really feel there's no need to know the shape of something to be able to effectively use shadows to describe its shape, I can't possibly contest that.

Here anon, I made an example of what I mean about using rendering to show where light is hitting, define the forms, and add volume. It's rough, but hopefully it gets the idea across.
