I'm going to chime in and say that this anon is actually 100% correct. You get way more bang for your buck by analysis-via-construction rather than copying, like MDJ does here.
However, to be fair, in the context of the David Finch post, the advice is directed at /beg/-mid/beg/ who at that point need mileage and good copying/hand-eye-coordination ability more than anything else, and at that point probably have little constructive drawing ability if at all, idk. Maybe for /int/s who can into construction pretty well, this challenge could be updated with a third pass wherein you go over each section of the book and construct your own figures based off the principles shown in Bridgman's work? Something to think about.

I myself am looking to try my hand at this challenge simply because my ability to copy things as I see them is rather weak, even though I've got pretty strong raw construction/perspective/imagination drawing ability (inb4 pyw, mw is p in picrelated). I've hardly straight up copied anything in my life outside of a few comic pages when I was something like 12 years old and a few gesture drawing sessions using gesture drawing tools online. My path of learning followed the Mark's Drawing Tutorials/ Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching route of focusing on pure construction from imagination, developing a strong sense of form and "drawing inside the page", as it were. I think this has worked very well for me in the end, better even than just copying things a lot would have, but in the end I want to revisit and strengthen the skill of purely-2D xeroxing because I believe that it's a part of a strong foundation in drawing fundamentals.

I'm not entirely sure whether I would be better served doing the Bargues plates or doing this though. Anybody got advice on this front, especially any anons from /msg/?

Very nice, and I'm jealous of your relative skill and youth. I will be coming along to harvest your young blood and adrenochrome shortly

Do you say that because it's not anniemoo or because it's more finished looking?
Anyways, it was an automatic drawing/doodle and I had my brain turned off for 90% of it, so I'm not sure I'd really call it "applying myself". Like I said, I just work off of bursts of inspiration and once that's over I can't be bothered to work on a piece anymore.
