So basically the only thing I can say is -
experiment non stop, try to transform what you draw, the more knowledge you already posses the better because you'll have more tools to make those controlled transformations. I guess people who know how to draw very well male anatomy can make those believable Hulk-like bad guys/bosses/giant warriors because they know that drawing this and that muscle slightly different will enlarge the chest, make arms bigger etc.

I...I guess that if you don't have this mindset or crystalize your idea well, you will never be good of drawing from imagination because you will never know what you want to do and wander aimlessly.

Btw, also one last thing - there's a book by Dodson, same guy who wrote "Keys to Drawing" that is recommended to beginners. It's called "Keys to Drawing from Imagination" (yeah, very imaginative, I know), but actually it's pretty solid and talks about techniques you can use to create fantastical new stuff and keep your creativity going.

Certainly IMO drawing from imagination requires more of design skills and having certain developed creative process thinking.
