I did it last year, it was fun, the lessons are well thought out. I used DeSmuME + wacom one it worked great, its best to play the game rather than using another app because then you don't have to bother with finding the right brushes and colors, also the brush engine is really good.

After being inspired by an older post, I completed the main lessons from Art Academy for Nintendo DS. The lessons were well thought-out with a good balance between freedom and restrictions to focus on real work, rather than just settings. Every lesson was great, except for the last one on landscapes. The swan lesson was my favorite. Before this, I avoided painting, but now I plan to do it more frequently as the game gave me the basic tools to create simple art.
