Yeah, choosing what kind of workflow to use/invent is subjective and dependent on the person, which is why I've been saying exactly that. The first post wondered what reason one could have to use passes, I'm just trying to answer that. As for an example, I don't collect any specific pieces of artwork, so I don't have one at hand. A quick search I found on Google may be interesting enough, I think.

you combine ambient occlusion + soft shadows.

think of occlusion as the smaller, sharp/dark shadows under things such as belts, collars, fabric overhanging very close to the skin, etc, where the overall light in the room really struggles to reach.
so rather than the intention of these shadows being "i want to show which direction light is coming from, and how intense it is, making my subject look 3D", it's just "i want to show the viewer that the overall light in this scene is really struggling to get into these spots".

you then combine the occlusion shadows on top of a more accurate set of shadows that resemble a 3D shape, but you purposely make the accurate shadows a soft grey with rather smooth edges, so that the occlusion ones always appear darker and sharper on the eyes.
