Draw a thing
Quickly fill the entire object with a value
Draw shadow shadowshapes
Darken/soften the core shadow
Quickly fill in basic shadow tone in relation to the local value you did earlier
Pull out highlights with an eraser if you didn't already
Done

The trick is to work in a very limited 3 to 5 step greyscale rather than get all noodle-y with values
