The answer is a pain in the ass. Light shifts the color temperature of local colors in halfway random ways. You basically shift everything over on the color wheel.

Likeness is pretty easy. You capture dominant features and get the shapes right, while also matching the overall shapes of the head and neck and gesture. There's a proko video where a dude does caricatures that doesn't explain it well, but shows you what to look for. You have to caricature a bit to get a good likeness.

I still prefer pencil for a lot of things. Like not having a difficulty curve out of an arcade fighter and the ability to erase.

Yeah it's very small. You probably put more effort into the reply than I did the whole thing. I'll take note of all that, I'm not always sure of the best way to render and stop giving fucks halfway through. I can do much worse though. Can't even get David duchovny in a wig right.
