How is classical art "a mindless copy of an image"? Where do you think Western art would be today without the Greeks and Romans?

I saw a painting a while back, but I don't remember what it was called; could someone help me out?

The painting portrayed two men. One had killed himself with a sword, I believe, and the other was holding his dead body. The eyes were what I remember so vividly; the man holding the dead body had the most terrified, emotionally overwhelmed eyes that I've ever seen.

If someone knows the painting I'm talking about I would appreciate it if you could tell me the name. Thanks.
