Of course like most things it's not all or nothing.
For example Monet broke away from tradition on certain points while following it on others. Picasso rejected tradition further, but he still used traditional techniques. Pollock used a new technique but traditional supports. And so on.
If you're not sure whether it's traditional enough, pick another painting.
