I think it is more helpful to think of the torso separated into the ribcage + navel than one solid shape. Keep in mind the proportions of the arms and legs as it looks a little janky on the character in the back. Also you should move him a little away from the 2nd character to create a better silhouette and negative space so she is not lost in the composition (please excuse my hasty fill bucket example)
