that's not necessarily right. When learning how to copy things you have to learn how to copy things 1:1 so that you can see all the details properly as is. You normally do not notice them, but going 1:1 forces you to notice all of them and make them properly. This is why copying tutorials recommend you draw using an upside down reference, or copy using a grid, because it forces/helps you to get everything instead of halfassing it.

Later on when you're studying gesture is when you're just copying loosely, because you really don't need to care about the details, it's more to jot down the look. Tho i'm no master of gesture.
