>I was planning on minoring in Computer science to try and make myself more competitive in the field
Having both programming skills & art/design/illustration skills is extremely advantageous that puts you in a much better position than most people. You do not need to go to art school for illustration. I did, and it was not necessary in the end, as success in illustration is all about your own unique style & approach - something that no one can really teach, and that you'll have to discover on your own. A vast majority of illustrators do not make a whole lot of money. Being poor sucks. Being worried about your future sucks. If you enjoy programming, then focus on that in school, and develop your drawing skills on the side.

Ditch your dreams of becoming a concept artist. It is extremely difficult to achieve, extremely competitive, not as "fun" as it might seem, and just generally not worth it.

>How would you go about sketching something with a lot of detail
By putting your pencil to paper and getting on with it. If it's going to be a loose sketch, then it'd make sense to simplify the complicated details.
>Is it even possible?
Yes.
>Should someone even bother?
If they want to and are interested in this scene, then yes. If not, no.
>Would you simplify the result significantly?
Yes. The degree to which you would simplify / stylize something is dependent on you and your tastes or intentions for the piece.

Editorial art done in a flat / graphic style. Very popular the past 10 years and can pay well for the amount of work involved.

>i tried to copy this and fucked it up
It's harder than it looks to pull it off right. Heavy stylization like this requires a good chunk of skill. You didn't fail because the style is bad - you fucked up because you are bad.

I often like to comb through /beg/ and see if there's any pieces I can help out with. However, I can't do that because there's little here to work with - this /beg/ thread in particular. You people need to pour more time into your work before you ask for a critique. Your incredibly basic sketches are not enough for anyone to provide real, substantial feedback.
