That's why I chose it, it's that style of painting but simplified down a bunch since he's not at that same level. I've done enough JJ studies to know that his stuff might look simple but it's actually complicated as fuck, where that Tahir one is pretty loose and simple aside from the character.

I'd recommend Colour and Light and/or Alla Prima. Both fantastic books, Alla Prima's the one I prefer because it's more practical. Gurney gets a bit too technical for me sometimes.

Don't worry too much about not understanding colours and such yet, that'll come with time, practice, and studying, especially studying. Check out paintings by JJ, Sargent, etc (pic related) and see how the shadows of things aren't just black, or just lower values of the base colour. That shadow on the side of the building is cool and blue as hell. The shadows under the awning/balcony thing though? Warm and orange/brown. Shadows can be cool or warm, have light within them, and take bounced colours from the sky or the ground, all sorts of things. Colour and Light will help teach you about those things, but for now, just remember to not shade with black like that, it muddies your painting too much. Keep at it, you're learning with each piece anon.

Seconded. I'd also say be conscious of your light source more. From the mic and such it looks like the light is from above and towards us, but there's not much of a shadow under her nose or neck to show that.
