what does that mean?

understanding that you have a problem simplifying is helpful. if you feel overwhelmed by detail/complexity, try zooming out mentally and working from the biggest shapes you see to the smallest. if you get the largest proportions, angles and relationships right at the outset, you can work your way down into finer detail more confidently. reducing problems to smaller, solvable chunks is good advice for problem solving in general; but with drawing and painting, smaller, simpler problems usually mean bigger, more abstract shapes.

enveloping is a good way to do this, starting from the beginning. picrel is a crappy envelope I drew on your ref. I'm a retard but it helps me a lot. here are some videos I skimmed but they seem legit enough to get the idea across:
