VILPPU IS GOD!

A lot of people, including me, used to think it was a lot more metaphorical than it was too. You're 100% right. Feeling the form is all about keeping in mind that the object you're drawing is a 3D form. It has front planes, side planes, back planes, etc. This is what Vilppu means when he says not to copy the models you're studying from. When you're *purely* copying an image all you're doing is chasing 2D contours that won't give you as much experience as attempting to understand why a shape contorts in that way, or identifying the foreshortening going on, or seeing one form move around the roundness of another form, and various other things.
I think is also what other people when they say to "draw in 3D." I used to think that meant making use of a lot of boxes and the sort, and it helps, but it's really the mindset of drawing as if you were sculpting the figure from clay. When I returned to Vilppu after a period of studying (when I was really only copying) anime I gained massive more gains each day and went from being complete garbage at drawing from imagination to... drawing substantially less like garbage from imagination. The quality's still poor, but it's a huge improvement in under one month's time.
I believe Vilppu is the ideal master for teaching people who want to draw in this modern age. It goes so well for people that want to have fun drawing. He doesn't over-complicate his method with too much construction, or measuring, or anything of the sort (not to poo-poo them but it's simply not Vilppu's main focus).
