why mix both? rei draws tons of art going between extremely stylized (chibi) and realism (relatively).
Pick something close to the level of realism you want and study that instead.

you can always check values with a B+W/desaturate filter, a lot of them are close but local value (color) is good enough here to do the work for you. If you want depth then start grouping your foreground/midground/background into different distinct value ranges (i.e. foreground dark transitioning into light background)
