I honestly recommend learning blender and playing around with 3D to be honest, that's how i figured out to think in terms of light. 3Dfags have tonnes and tonnes of really crazy stuff like IBL (image based lighting), HDRI (high dynamic range imagery), reflection mapping etc that can be appropriated in 2d stuff, but surprisingly isn't enough.

Here's some elements from a car for example that i painted in 2D using normal maps. The normal map defines the reflection.
