How to turn a photo, or rather a game screenshot, into a painting? I just need it to look painterly since I want to do many in a short amount of time

I'm shaking bros

So guys how do you go about tweaking the early-mid stages of an illustration, in terms of brightness/contrast, curves, hue/sat. I think I'm getting too used to the dark PS bg while working, so that the actual illustration always leads to path of too heavy dark tones. I'm just getting frustrated over and over since I can't nail a healthy mood from the get-go, but need to rely on these fixes... (like I heard krenz and friends almost don't have any need for it),
do you have any tips perhaps?
