going over a confident line with another stroke to define it better is not chicken scratch, chicken scratch is building one long line through multiple disjointed lines that end up making it look "hairy"

Not having fun, but on a technical level, hairy lines / chicken scratch (but see pic related)

No, it's called feeling the form and it's great. If you want clean lines you trace over it with a stabilizer.

How do people "find the form" like the left of pic related? I've been taught to laying things out just using geometric shapes, but these dudes can throw out a flay on lines in a few minutes and get the lineart out of that seemingly. What do tou even call this method? It's more than just sketching isn't it?

I've always avoided doing chicken-scratching, since I draw digitally I just undo bad strokes when sketching, maybe leave 2-3 overlapping ones at most. Is this a good or a bad thing?
I feel like chicken-scratching could help me feel out the form more or something, like on the left. Since I just found this image; what makes the one on the left NOT chicken-scratching, the precision?

(disclaimer since you did not pyw we can't tell if you are chicken scratching or not, also chicken scratching is usually way worse on traditional media, digital is more forgiving about it)

>explain to me why chicken scratching is bad
It is unclear, it does not put down lines that are clear, thus even if it is a sketch when you do your lineart above you cannot be sure where you intended that line to be. Especially if you are drawing things that are highly detailed and you do not have experience with.

It takes time, having many smaller less visible lines is wasted time if you want one solid line after. You could spend that time crosshatching for shading.

It is more strain on your body, yeah I know this sounds trivial but if you are drawing a lot you really need to pay attention to be economical because you will feel the pressure of time and pressure of fatigue on the body. Trust me, you will have a ton of other shit to worry about that you don't consider when you are still starting out.

Probably because it's unfinished, loose, and gestural.
The anatomy and mark making is perfectly sound.

sketching isn't chicken scratching you stupid faggot. Chicken scratching only happens when you're a beg who barely knows how to use a pencil to draw.

Not chicken scratching, you misunderstand what that is like im sure most ppl itt have already told you. I think some people just think 'loose messy sketch' = 'chicken scratch'.
The main characteristic of chicken scratch is too many very short strokes to make up a line that shows the artist is not confident about their lines

He probably means that you should aim for left one when your editor says you should avoid right. They don't necessarily contradict each other.
