Negative space as far as artwork is concerned, is basically everything that is not your subject. For example, the (rough)triangle that your subject's right hand makes in your reference vs in your linework can be compared to check proportions and general fidelity. If you did a silhouette selection in a painting software and inverted it, it'll give you negative space. pic related. This might help, too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_space
