even just taking Olympia by Manet as an example of this, Olympia herself is painted in practically pure white paint, even compositionally the woman with the darker complexion and her can only exist together because their skin tones are so dichotomous. For the most part I do not paint women who are on either end of that spectrum. Women I paint tend to have more medium complexions. In paintings that are of darker or lighter women I solve those compositional problems differently.
