I forgot to mention that, thanks anon. Sometimes I use graphite on a really rough pad meant for acrylics and charcoal,and boy is it a tough medium to work with just to get a different texture. I'm not certain he should worry about textured or toned paper right now though, I think plain printer/notepad paper will do fine for line practice. Getting fancy textured and toned paper just to draw lines on seems like waste of money, especially for a beginner. Though that is some solid advice for once he gets into actually studying models.
