Then just spending enough time in the stage where most things are pretty simple shapes and forms so you can very easily adjust where they are without being super destructive. Also I guess you could just copy something line for line but what is more interesting is as you go through the process of copying you can kind of break down and figure out "How can this apply to my workflow when I am not copying" so you can use your own base figure and build the details up on-top of it and you are just reinforcing your own workflow you can use outside of copying as you do the copy. To the point where eventually you can just divorce your workflow/figure from the copy and the world is your oyster that character can become anything you can imagine.
