for instance here's Victorine Meurent. She modelled for Manet's Olympia. Not only was she one of the most recognized women in one of the most recognized paintings of the time, she was also an artist, and exhibited at the Salon. Maybe you don't know who she is, but she was a historically important person simply from modelling so well for a painting.

If Manet had gotten a male model for that painting and named it Olympus it wouldn't have made any impact whatsoever.

Don't malign the relationship the genders have with each other just because it hasn't been your experience. Men paint, women model. That's the relationship.
