Here's a realistic (yes I know it's animu and I mean it in choice of composition, not style, ya doinks) piece on the same theme.

It does an incredibly solid job on the visual storytelling. It's clearly a snapshot of a larger story, and it both clearly communicates a dynamic between the two girls and raises the sort of questions that fuel the imagination. You can't see the beginning of the story, and you can't see the end, but you know that they're there.
