I actually prefer the top one because it isn't as blended and soft all around, making it look more dynamic and less artificial. Also the upper one has clearer contrast, while it's harder to separate shadows from lights on the bottom one. I like the composition in the bottom though.
I still think your biggest problem are the brushes, the gritty traditional look just doesn't work with the default round brushes, you need something with more texture. You might like brushes that mimic oil paints.
